Excerpt: The SR Leader class was a class of experimental 0-6-6-0 articulated steam locomotive, produced to the design of the innovative engineer Oliver Bulleid. The Leader was an attempt to extend the life of steam traction on Britain’s railways by eliminating many of the operational drawbacks associated with existing steam locomotives. It was intended as a replacement for the ageing fleet of M7 class tank engines still in operation on the Southern Railway (SR). Design work began in 1946, and development continued after the nationalisation of the railways in 1948, under the auspices of British Railways (BR). The Leader project was part of Bulleid’s desire to modernise the steam locomotive based on experience gained with the Southern Railway’s fleet of electric stock. Bulleid considered that attitudes towards the labour-intensity of steam operation had changed during the post-war period, favouring dieselisation and electrification. In an attempt to demonstrate the continued potential of steam Bulleid pushed forward the boundaries of steam-power, allowing it to compete with diesel and electric locomotives in terms of labour-saving and ease of operation. The design incorporated many novel features, such as the use of thermic siphons, bogies, and cabs at either end of the locomotive, resulting in its uniquefor a steam locomotivemodern diesel-like appearance. Several of its innovations proved to be unsuccessful however, partly accounting for the project’s cancellation in the early 1950s. Five Leader locomotives were begun, although only one was completed. The operational locomotive was trialled on the former Southern Railway network around Brighton. Problems with the design, indifferent reports on performance, and political pressure surrounding spiraling … More: |

Bahngesellschaft (Missouri) $14.14 Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The BNSF Railway (reporting mark BNSF), formerly known as the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, is an American freight railroad company headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas; it is one of four remaining transcontinental railroads and one of the largest freight railroad networks in North America. Only the Union Pacific Railroad, its primary competitor for Western U.S. freight, is larger in size. The BNSF Railway moves more intermodal freight traffic than any other rail system in the world. It was formed December 31, 1996, as the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1999 BNSF and the Canadian National Railway announced their intention to merge and form a new corporation entitled the North American Railways to be headquartered in Montreal, Canada. The United States’ Surface Transportation Board (STB) placed a 15-month moratorium on all rail mergers, which ended this merger. On January 24, 2005, the railroad’s name was officially changed to BNSF Railway. The BNSF Railway is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, the holding company formed by the September 22, 1995 merger of Burlington Northern, Incorporated and the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation. According to corporate press releases, the BNSF Railway is among the top transporters of intermodal freight in North America. It also hauls enough coal to generate roughly 10% of the electricity produced in the United States. The company’s three transcontinental routes provide a high-speed link between the western and eastern United States. On November 3, 2009, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway announced that it would acquire the remaining 77.4% of BNSF that it didn’t already own for $100 per share in cash and stock – a deal valued at $44 billion. The company is investing an estimated $34 billion in BNSF … |

Long known for its wide range of photographic film products, Kodak is re-focusing on two major markets: digital photography and digital printing. Kodak’s origins rest with Eastman Dry Plate Company, and the General Aristo Company, founded by inventor George Eastman and businessman Colin Craft in Rochester and Jamestown, New York. The General Aristo Company was formed in 1899 in Jamestown New York, with George Eastman as treasurer, and this company purchased the stock of American Aristotype Company. Eventually, the business in Jamestown was moved in its entirety to Rochester, and the plants in Jamestown were razed. The Eastman Dry Plate Company was responsible for the first cameras suitable for nonexpert use. The Kodak company attained its name from the first simple roll film cameras produced by Eastman Dry Plate Company, known as the “Kodak” in its product line. The cameras proved such an enormous success that the word Kodak was incorporated into the company name. George Eastman registered the trademark Kodak on September 4, 1888. The Eastman Kodak Company was founded in 1892. The company is incorporated in New Jersey but has its offices in Rochester, New York. Better Good than Lucky $29.95 Many volumes of great investment literature have been written in the last 100 years. The problem is the average investor does not have time to read all of this literature, much less grasp the key concepts. This book solves the problem by explaining key investing concepts in easy to understand language. Better Good than Lucky is based on four primary concepts:• Diversification• Strong business model• Good financials• Attractive valuationThese four concepts, used by professionals for years, reflect Harry Markowitz’s theories on portfolio construction, Philip Fisher’s writings on business models, and Benjamin Graham’s focus on financial strength and value. Harry Markowitz revolutionized portfolio management and was awarded a Nobel Prize for his efforts. Fisher and Graham are said to have influenced Warren Buffett. Also incorporated are strategies from Len Zacks (earnings surprises and earnings estimate revisions), John Bogle (controlling investment expenses), and Burton Malkiel (the randomness of stock market returns). This book does more than incorporate past literature; it reflects my many years of experience in the financial services industry. I led the development of the Zacks Method for Investing, a stock selection methodology used to manage the model portfolios on Zacks.com, which has significantly outperformed the S&P 500. I understand what makes a stock a good value and what does not. Equally important to the individual investor, this book explains how to analyze a stock like a professional. I have created a reference guide, enabling investors to get the information they need when they need it. This goes deeper than a step-by-step process to provide valuable information on:• The Investment Community and Your Portfolio• Corporate Analysis• Valuation• Creating Your Own Luck-Charles Rotblut, CFA |

Streator was itself the product of the Erie Motor Carriage Company and had been manufacturing the Halladay automobile since 1905. Barley’s new company was called Barley Manufacturing Co. and he reopened the factory at Streator, Illinois and continued to produce the Halladay for a few years. Barley, Cloyd Y. Kenworthy, a New York auto dealer then selling only electric automobiles, and Karl H. Martin, who later developed the Wasp automobile, decided to build an upscale automobile, and incorporated Barley Motor Car Co. in New York State in September 1916 with a capitalization of $50K. It was established for the purpose of building motor trucks, cars, autos and accessories. Shortly thereafter, the company issued more classes of stock and was recapitalized with an additional $760K, obtaining the existing assets of Barley’s manufacturing company. Manufacturing was soon moved to Kalamazoo, occupying the former Kalamazoo Buggy Co. factory. The initial model introduced in 1916 was called the Roamer. The name was suggested by Kenworthy’s chauffeur after a popular racing horse of the era. The car was very stylish and the grill was nickel plated and modeled after the Rolls-Royce.
